DEXTER MANNING

Vancouver, BC

Age: 25

If anybody on the team has an insatiable appetite for speed, it’d be Dexter. Even though he is super friendly and easy-going in person, he truly is a madman on his board. Something is wrong with dat boy.

DEXTER MANNING 》INTERVIEW

What hooked you on skateboarding?

I realized pretty early on that it’s endless, there’s always going to be things to work on and ways to improve your riding. You’ll never get bored because you can always find a new way to push yourself.

What are your hobbies?

Pretty much anything competitive, I’m down. So much ping-pong.

Any hidden talents?

I’m pretty alright at pool. Definitely better than Matt, no matter what he says.

The best piece of advice/wisdom for new riders?

Learn how to foot brake.

Favourite setup?

Current set is my favourite one ever.

If you had to have only 3 Landyachtz boards for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Small Blind for racing, Gambler for chill mountain days and ATV Classic for around town. That would about cover all the bases for me.

Favourite skater? Or who inspires you?

Favourite skater of all time is Evren Ozan. Go watch some old videos of that dude, best style ever.

First Landyachtz board?

Bamboo Pinner, the one with the big green and black face on it. That was my first ever board.

Skater that you would love to skate with?

I miss skating with Madison Crum. He needs to fix his knee and stop surfing so damn much.

What is skateboarding to you?

I really look at skating as a means by which I can push myself to my limits and really explore what I am capable of. The act of skateboarding is enjoyable in its own right but I really value what it’s shown me about myself and the way it constantly lets me expand my comfort zone and abilities.

What would you be doing if you were not skating?

I have absolutely no idea.

Which skate videos changed your life?

This fucked me up when I saw it the first time.

Cal has the raddest style.

Which three books, shows or movies changed your life?

I don’t know about changed my life but my top 3 books I’d recommend to everyone are: Tinkers by Paul Harding, I Am Radar by Reif Larson and Us Conductors by Sean Michaels

What would change in Skateboarding if you had the chance?

Probably just get rid of social media. I liked how when I was starting you’d see one or two things of your favourite riders every year and it made it more special. Now there’s so much content available that everything kinda gets lost in the noise.

Favourite music to skate too?

This changes all the time for me but these are a few albums I’ve been stoked on recently:

Courtney Barnett: Tell Me How You Really Feel

Waxahatchee: Saint Cloud

Better Oblivion Community Center: Self-titled

and

Harkin: Self-titled

In your opinion, what is the role of a team rider?

At the most basic level, to get people stoked on the brands they represent. There are so many different ways to do this successfully and it’s important that everyone who wants to get sponsored decides for themselves what they want out of it and what they’re comfortable doing.

What is your dream setup? It doesn’t even need to exist!

My current one. For the first time in a very long time, everything under my feet feels almost perfect.
